Whether you're at work or at home, gathering with family or staying apart this year to halt the spread of Coronavirus, I hope it's a good day and that the upcoming year brings much to be thankful for. In the meantime, enjoy this video of the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium's African giant rats partaking of a special Thanksgiving treat!
Hey there, Zoo Dude (sorry, couldn't find a better name)! It's the volunteer commenter from back in April wishing you a happy Thanksgiving! It's been a really interesting season (this summer I was qualified to be an assistant to our aquarists and reptile/avian team). I saw the 'backstage' of our zoo, got over my fear of (and fell in love with) our cassowaries, learned how to fillet herring and do eye exams on tortoises, and finally determined that yes, this is what I want to do with my life. This has been a crazy year, but a really good personal one (despite losing one of my pet rats last week). My latest exciting adventure in zoo-ery is doing a publicity video with our new duikers--have you ever cared for any? They're very nervous, but extremely gentle and beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWishing you luck in all things zoo-ish!
I'm very glad to hear that you're continuing to enjoy your zoo volunteer experience! Cassowaries are well worth being afraid of - or at least highly respectful of. Duikers are wonderful little animals - I've had a little bit of experience caring for them, but would never say "no" to more. It sounds like you're having some great experiences - take it from someone who started volunteering as a teen - these memories will stay with you for a lifetime!
